CompactLogix Series

The CompactLogix Series is a family of programmable automation controllers (PACs) developed by Rockwell Automation for mid-size control applications. CompactLogix combines processing, I/O, and communication functions into a compact, modular platform.

CompactLogix is designed for smaller, more space-constrained applications, while ControlLogix is geared toward large-scale, high-performance systems. CompactLogix uses integrated controllers and I/O in a compact form factor, whereas ControlLogix uses separate modular components within a chassis. Both systems use the same Studio 5000 software and share common programming logic, making it easy to scale between platforms.

Popular CompactLogix models include the 1769-L3x series, the 5370 series (1769-L30ER, L33ER, L36ERM), and the 5380 series (5069-L3xER). The 5370 models are widely used for standard machine control, while the newer 5380 series offers increased performance, enhanced security, and higher-speed I/O capabilities.

CompactLogix controllers are programmed using Studio 5000 Logix Designer. This software enables configuration, ladder logic programming, motion control setup, and communication mapping. Older firmware versions may require RSLogix 5000, but most modern CompactLogix units are supported by Studio 5000.

Yes. CompactLogix supports local and remote I/O expansion. The 1769 series supports direct left/right I/O module connections, while newer 5380 models use 5069 I/O and can support distributed I/O over EtherNet/IP. Always verify the controller’s I/O capacity and slot limits before expansion.
