Allen Bradley 1756-IB16IF ControlLogix DC Digital I/O Module

The Allen Bradley 1756-IB16IF is a ControlLogix DC Digital I/O Module that is part of the 1756 ControlLogix system.

It is a high-speed peer control digital module with 16 individually isolated inputs. The removable terminal block housing, or RTB, required when installing the 1756-IB16IF to the chassis can either be the 1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H.

The 1756-IB16IF is one of the modules that use CIP sync for both scheduling and timestamps. Modules such as this are known as slave-only devices because they need another module on the same network that will act as the master clock. The CIP sync is used system-wide, which means that the timestamps and schedule values are consistent across all the modules in the system.

This module can also be used for detecting or latching short duration pulses. Incoming pulses with durations as short as 10 µs can be detected by the 1756-IB16IF module—this is assuming the frequency is 4kHz within a period of 250 µs.

Initiating event tasks over dedicated second connections in response to four user-defined input patterns can also be done by this module, with every pattern using any of the 16 points available.

Tags are also available in this module, which includes any of these: configuration, event, or input. The configuration tag means the structure of data is sent from the controller to the I/O module upon power up. An event tag means the structure of event data is continually sent from the I/O module to the controller or a listening module containing the current operational status of the module. Finally, input tags mean the structure of data is continually sent from the I/O module to the controller or a listening peer module containing the current operational status of the module.

It should be noted that the input filter’s function on this module is different from other digital I/O modules. As a result of this, the input delay time of both ‘off’ to ‘on’ and ‘on’ to ‘off’ are 14 µs/23 µs max plus the user-configurable filter time of 0 to 30,000 µs.

The operating voltage range of the 1756-IB16IF is 10 to 30V DC. The current draw at 5.1V is 275 mA and 3 mA at 24V. It has a total backplane power of 1.47 W and a voltage category of 12/24V DC sink/source. At an off-state, its maximum voltage is 5V and maximum current is 1.5mA. The current during an on-state range from 2 mA at 10V DC to 5 mA at 30V DC
