Industrial Flame Sensors and Scanners

TCI Supply offers a broad range of industrial flame sensors and scanners, Fireye, Honeywell, Siemens, Cleaver Brooks, Fives, Maxon and more. Designed to enhance safety in various industrial environments, our products provide reliable detection of flames and are suitable for integration with existing safety systems. Whether you need sensors for hazardous locations or standard industrial settings, our solutions ensure accurate and timely flame detection, supporting your operational safety requirements.

Flame scanners are devices used to detect the presence and quality of a flame in combustion systems, such as boilers, furnaces, and gas turbines. They are critical for ensuring safe and efficient operation by confirming that a flame is present and stable. Here are the main types of flame scanners:

Infrared (IR) Flame Scanners

  • Detects the infrared radiation emitted by the flame.
  • Effective for monitoring flames that have high carbon content and emit strong IR signals, such as oil and coal flames.

Ultraviolet (UV) Flame Scanners

  • Detects ultraviolet radiation emitted by the flame.
  • Commonly used for gas flames, which emit strong UV radiation.
  • UV flame scanners are often used in safety-critical applications because they quickly respond to the absence of a flame.

UV/IR Flame Scanners

  • Combines both UV and IR detection technologies.
  • Provides enhanced reliability and discrimination between true flames and false alarms by analyzing both UV and IR signals.
  • Commonly used in applications where diverse fuel types are used or where high reliability is required.

Visible Light Flame Scanners

  • Detects the visible light spectrum emitted by the flame.
  • Typically used for applications where other types of radiation (UV or IR) may be obscured.

Fiber Optic Flame Scanners

  • Utilizes fiber optics to transmit the flame’s radiation from the combustion area to the scanner.
  • Allows the scanner to be placed in a remote or protected location, which is useful in high-temperature or hazardous environments.

Self-Checking Flame Scanners

  • Equipped with a self-checking feature that continuously monitors the scanner’s functionality.
  • Ensures that the scanner is operational and capable of detecting a flame, increasing system safety.

Industrial Flame Sensors and Scanners FAQ

Can your industrial and commercial flame sensors be integrated with existing safety systems?

Yes, our flame sensors are designed for seamless integration with a wide variety of existing safety systems. Our team has the knowledge to get you the correct part for your set up. If your part is obsolete, our team will find your part or its direct replacement.

What detection ranges and sensitivity levels are available for your industrial and commercial flame sensors?

Our flame sensors offer a range of detection distances and sensitivity levels to meet the specific needs of different industrial applications. Details can be found in each product’s technical specifications.

The Honeywell C7061A series, for example, can detect flames up to 50 feet or more, depending on the application and fuel type.  The Fireye 45UV5 scanner can detect 1 to 30 feet, depending on the burner type and flame size.  The Fireye 95DSS2 series detects typically up to 100 feet.

Are your industrial and commercial flame sensors suitable for use in hazardous environments?

Yes, we provide flame sensors that are certified for use in hazardous environments, designed to operate reliably under extreme conditions. Check your parts technical data to ensure proper ATEX or IEC certifications apply to your factories application.

Honeywell offers flame scanners that come with explosion-proof housings, making them suitable for hazardous locations such as refineries, chemical plants, or other industrial settings where flammable gases or vapors may be present.  These operate in temperatures from -40°F to +175°F (-40°C to +79°C), which is useful for high-temperature environments often found in industrial applications.

The Fireye 45UV5 flame scanner is designed with hazardous environment compliance in mind. It typically carries certifications such as Class I, Div. 1 & 2, and Class II Div. 1 & 2 for hazardous locations in the U.S., as well as ATEX certifications for global hazardous environment standards.

Do you offer resources for selecting and maintaining industrial and commercial flame detection equipment?

We offer guides and resources to assist with the selection and maintenance of our flame detection equipment. Our support team is also available for personalized assistance.  We also provide repairs and rebuilds in-house with one year warranty.

Understand Your Application Needs:
  • Type of Fuel: Determine the type of fuel being used in your burner system (e.g., natural gas, oil, coal). Some flame scanners, like UV scanners, work better with fuels that produce strong UV radiation, while IR scanners are more suited to solid fuels like coal.
    • Honeywell: Models like the C7012 UV or C7061 IR/UV can handle multiple fuel types.
    • Fireye: The 45UV5 for UV detection and the InSight II (95IR) for infrared are common choices for multiple fuels.
  • Burner Type and Size: Large industrial burners may require flame scanners with longer detection ranges, while smaller burners need compact and more sensitive models.
Operating Environment:
  • Temperature Range: Choose a flame scanner that can handle the ambient temperatures in your application.
    • Honeywell C7061A: Suitable for high-temperature environments (up to 175°F or 79°C).
    • Fireye 45UV5: Operates up to 150°F (65°C), suitable for moderately high temperatures.
  • Dust, Moisture, and Contaminants: If your environment has dust, moisture, or is generally harsh, ensure the flame scanner has a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating.
    • Both Honeywell and Fireye offer models with IP66 ratings for dust and water protection.
  • Hazardous Location Requirements: If your system is located in a hazardous environment with explosive gases or dust, select a flame scanner with the appropriate certifications (e.g., Class I/II, Div. 1 & 2 or ATEX).
Flame Detection Technology:
  • UV Flame Sensors: Best for detecting gas and oil flames, as these produce strong UV radiation. Suitable for applications that need fast response times but are sensitive to false signals from sunlight.
  • IR Flame Sensors: Ideal for detecting flames from solid fuels like coal. They are less prone to interference from sunlight or other external sources.
  • Dual-Technology (UV/IR): Some scanners combine UV and IR detection for more reliable flame detection in challenging conditions. These scanners can distinguish between real flames and background interference
